Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity

1 of 3

Get your waders and rain coats because we’re going…building?  On Saturday June 6th, volunteers overcame rain and mud to showcase what it means to be a Buccaneer. Deb Jacobs & family, Chuck Love & family, Maureen Fisher & family, Marian Brenton & family, Cindy Weigel, Jill Danner, Tony Gentile, Tyler Thomas, and Chris Boeke all volunteered their day to support local families and the Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity.  As a local and tangible philanthropy, the GDMHH provides decent and affordable homeownership for qualified low-income families.  Celebrating a milestone in 2008 by building its 100th home, they continue to push to build a greater Des Moines with plans of an additional 150 homes by 2013.

After a successful showing of support for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Iowa - Bowl for the Kids, the SDI West Des Moines office wanted to take a step further in the local community.  Lead by their own compassion and dedication, everyone was educated in the simplest and sometimes the most complicated building practices.  Sixteen amateur builders picked up a hammer to assist in building two new homes; partaking in activities such as framing, insulating, and siding.  Alongside the manual driven effort, Buccaneer made a charitable donation to the GDMHH based off the volunteered hours worked -something that will help beyond what was given that day.
