$1,000 Donation Serves Double (or Triple) Duty

1 of 3
WARRENTON, VA, December 17, 2007 – The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), a customer of Buccaneer Computer Systems & Service, Inc. (BCSSI), held a silent auction recently to raise money for the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). Some of the DISA employees wanted to make a unique offering in support of the fundraiser and decided to donate… themselves! A humorous flyer was distributed and advertised that the winning bidder would get four hours of “hard labor” of his or her choice from a group of five employees. Heather Newell, BCSSI President, who works with the “laborers” at DISA, heard about the auction and decided “that’s what I want for my birthday.” Her $1,000 bid was the winner and her choice for the five volunteers was to have them work a Saturday at Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) in Washington, D.C. The laborers, along with Heather and her husband Gary, COO of BCSSI, went to the medical center on November 17th in a volunteer visit organized by Operation First Response (OFR) – an organization dedicated to serving our wounded soldiers. At Walter Reed the group helped unload many boxes of goods donated to the soldiers. While there they met and talked with many of the men and women recovering from their wounds. One soldier, Jeremy Goodman, had been paralyzed from the waist down by a roadside bomb. He had been in and out of the hospital for much of the last several years – yet his attitude and spirit were in wonderful condition! When Gary and Heather asked if there was anything they could do for him, he responded that he would still be in the hospital at the end of December but was sure he could get a day out. He revealed that his ultimate wish was to attend the Redskins - Cowboys game at FedEx Field on December 30th. Upon hearing this they decided to take action, procuring tickets online and returning to WRAMC to personally deliver them. Jeremy’s holiday wish is coming true - the soldier and his family will be attending the game – enjoying front row, club level seats.
